What Can Cause Hammertoe?

The foot condition that is known as hammertoe is considered to be a deformity of the joints and ligaments. It affects the middle joints of the second and third toe, and causes them to bend downward, resembling a hammer. This ailment can develop from genetic reasons, or if a foot injury has occurred. Additionally, if the patient has high arches, or frequently wears shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, the beginning stages of hammertoe may develop. A common medical condition that may contribute to the onset of hammertoe can be arthritis, which can cause severe pain and discomfort. Mild relief may be found when shoes that are worn fit properly, and it may be beneficial to wear proper insoles. If you have hammertoe, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can guide you toward feeling better.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Understanding a “Lisfranc Injury"

What is known as the Lisfranc joint complex is made up of the five metatarsal bones, as well as the tendons and ligaments which connect the midfoot to the forefoot. A “Lisfranc Injury” occurs when these ligaments or tendons become sprained or the metatarsal bones fracture. A Lisfranc injury can result from trauma from a direct force or a quick rotation in the midfoot area. Because of this, athletes such as baseball or football players are at the highest risk for developing this injury. A majority of Lisfranc injuries do require surgery to realign the joints and allow the bones to heal correctly. Recovery from this surgery usually takes around 6 months. Because of the extent of the injury, athletes who have injured their foot should consult with a podiatrist to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Risk Factors That Make Gout More Likely

Gout is considered to be a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. When there is an overabundance of uric acid, it can crystallize and become lodged in the joints. This can produce severe pain, swelling, redness, and joint stiffness. Often, the joints of the big toe are most commonly affected. Certain conditions make gout more likely to occur. These include consuming foods that contain high fructose corn syrup or are high in purines, being obese, having chronic kidney disease, taking certain drugs, and having cancers or blood disorders. Gout can also be hereditary. If you experience a gout flareup, seeing a podiatrist for treatment and diet plans can help.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

What Causes Ankle Pain?

Ankle pain can occur due to various medical conditions or injuries such as sprains and strains—where the ligaments, muscles or tendons supporting the ankle become overstretched, torn, or otherwise injured. Ankle fractures—where one or more bones in the ankle break or shatter—can also be extremely painful, depending on the severity of the injury. When the Achilles tendon—which connects the calf muscle to the heel bone—becomes overstretched or torn, an Achilles tendon rupture can occur. Fallen arches can cause painful shifts in the ankle bone. Systemic illnesses can also be to blame for ankle pain. For instance, gout causes painful uric acid crystals to form on the ankle joint, osteoarthritis wears down cartilage and creates bone-on-bone friction, and rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease which can attack healthy joints, like those in the ankle. A podiatrist can examine you and perform various tests to diagnose your ankle pain and use a variety of treatments and procedures to heal it.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.
