What Can Cause a Bunion to Develop?

A small bump on the side of the big toe may be indicative of a bunion. This protrusion can become larger, and it may push the other toes closer to each other. Probable causes of a developing bunion can include genetics and wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Additionally, existing medical conditions such as certain types of arthritis may cause a bunion, or it may develop as a result of repetitive stress on the front of the foot. A bunion may cause difficulty in walking, and the foot may feel painful and stiff. There are effective methods that can be implemented which may help to manage bunion symptoms. Many patients find mild relief when there is ample room in the shoes that are worn, or from using a bunion pad or wearing custom made orthotics. If you notice a bunion that is beginning to form, it is recommended that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can offer you the correct treatment options.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM of Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Podiatrists often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your provider.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Research has shown the feet can indicate serious health issues within the body. The condition known as scleroderma may be evident in the feet. The symptoms can consist of cold feet and toes and can be associated with Raynaud’s phenomenon. Additional signs of scleroderma may include having patches of thickened skin that develop on the feet. The affected skin may be dry or itchy and will often require expert medical care. A chilblain may occur with Raynaud's disease and the skin may turn red, swollen, and become tender when touched. Having poor blood circulation and exposure to cold weather may lead to this condition, and it can affect the toes. There are simple methods that can be implemented to properly care for the feet. These can consist of choosing shoes that fit correctly and moisturizing the feet often. Many people who are affected by systemic sclerosis can experience a feeling of walking on small pebbles and this may be relieved by wearing custom-made orthotics. If you have any of these symptoms and would like to know more about systemic diseases of the feet, please confer with a podiatrist.

When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly.  If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric needs.

Systemic Diseases of the Feet

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

Simple Moves to Support Calf and Ankle Health

Calf and ankle problems can limit mobility and increase the risk of injury, but targeted exercises may help strengthen and stretch these areas. Two effective options are calf raises and ankle circles. Calf raises build strength in the lower leg. To do them, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and slowly rise onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the ground. Hold for a moment, then lower back down, and repeat 10 to 15 times. This move strengthens the calf muscles and supports ankle stability. Ankle circles improve flexibility and circulation. Sit or lie down with one leg extended. Slowly rotate your foot in a circular motion, making full, smooth circles. Complete 10 rotations in one direction, then switch. This helps keep the ankle joint mobile and reduces stiffness. If you are experiencing ongoing pain or weakness in your calves or ankles, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Trimming toenails may seem simple, but doing it the wrong way can lead to discomfort and foot problems. Cutting nails too short or rounding the edges can increase the risk of painful ingrown toenails. The safest way to trim is to cut the nails straight across and avoid digging into the corners. It is also important to use clean, sharp clippers and take your time, especially if you have thickened or brittle nails. For seniors with diabetes, poor circulation, or vision problems, toenail care can be more complicated. Attempting self-care may cause small cuts or infections that can become serious, if not properly treated. A podiatrist can safely trim your toenails, reduce thickness, and prevent complications. They also provide expert care if ingrown nails or nail infections are already present. For safe and healthy toenail management, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for professional care.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM from Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Foot and Ankle Injuries From Cycling

Cycling places repetitive stress on the feet and ankles, making them prone to overuse injuries that develop gradually from constant pedaling. The pressure transferred through the pedals can lead to Achilles tendinitis. As this tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel becomes irritated from overuse or poor technique, pain erupts at the back of the heel. Plantar fasciitis is another frequent problem for cyclers, with sharp heel pain developing from irritation of the thick band of tissue along the sole of the foot. Numbness in the toes or top of the foot may occur due to nerve compression from tight shoes or improper cleat placement. Pain in the ball of the foot can also result from repeated pushing pressure during long rides. A podiatrist can diagnose the source of the pain from cycling , recommend footwear adjustments, prescribe custom orthotics, or discuss surgery when necessary. If you have sustained a foot or ankle injury from cycling, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an evaluation appropriate  and treatment.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact Massimo Pietrantoni, DPM of Rochester Podiatry, LLP. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
